Jul 20, 2023
It's that time of year, back-to-school time. It's the perfect time to prepare yourself and your kids for the school year by searching for supplies and making new friends. The St. Louis area is rich in back-to-school activities. There are plenty of programs at local museums to check out and events where you can get all your supplies. We've created a roundup of some standout places to check off your list before the first big day of the school year.
Local History and Fun Places to Prepare for Back-to-School
National Blues Museum
There are musical events at the National Blues Museum every Thursday and Saturday. The Jams are more low-key on Thursday evenings. And Blues on the Block draws local and national talent for performances starting at 4 pm. Check out the schedule of live events or tour the museum so you're up to date on the latest and most terrific blues shaping our culture today.
Six Flags St. Louis
Just admit it, no summer is complete without at least one visit to Six Flags. Roller coasters, cotton candy, and rides galore really help you prepare for returning to school.
St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station
The St. Louis Aquarium is super fun to visit because you can see everything under the water you usually can't see. As we write this, it's shark week (end of July 2023). But there are always sea creatures to admire and research at the aquarium. Plus, if you don't feel like leaving the house, there's an extensive library of online recordings and interactive videos.
Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site
A little lesser known than some other museums and historical sites in our area but nonetheless intriguing is the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Just across the river lies this site full of information on our local area. Walking the grounds is interesting, but the AR project/program makes it even better. You can really explore what it's like today and hundreds of years ago when over 20,000 people lived in Cahokia.
